It is the first Monday in May. Otherwise known as the Met Gala. One of the few days of the year that the Met Museum is closed to the public, in order to host the Met Gala fundraiser for the museum’s Costume Institute. The Costume Institute is critical for preserving and celebrating the history of fashion.
There has always been a debate of whether fashion should be considered art, and often fashion is not included in art museums. This started to change in 2011 when the Met hosted the exhibit Savage Beauty which celebrated the work of the late Alexander McQueen. I had the privilege of attending the exhibit, and it was one of my most inspired days as a designer. McQueen was a true artist. His clothing told stories in the most stunning fashion.
