January is all about new beginnings. Although I love the holidays, it’s really nice to get back to a routine and regular habits! If you’re feeling a little bit of post holiday blues, now is a good time to refresh your habits, your style, and your space to truly embrace a new year.
It’s the time of year where everyone sets their new years resolutions. I know it can be an eye rolling time where everyone seems to be already bragging about the things that they’re going to do, but it really is an inspiring time to start something new. The key to successful resolutions is to set actionable goals. It’s not all about the end result, but how you plan to get there.
I compare goal setting to training for running marathons. To be able to run 26.2 miles, you have to start somewhere, and that is usually by running single digit distances! You can never achieve the marathon distance without lots of steps along the way. Most goals are really similar– you don’t get in shape by going to the gym once. You get in shape by starting to go once a week, and then twice, and then it becomes your daily habit.
The new decade is just around the corner. Something about it being 2020 makes it feel like a really big year. I’ve shared before that I actually really like new year’s resolutions. They get a bad reputation for being the time of year everyone does a crash diet and floods the gym for a month before going back to the same old routine. But you can’t achieve a goal if you don’t start it, and now is the time to start!
I’ve found that the most important part of setting a goal and sticking to it is to make it realistic. You are not going to work out every single day for the next year, so don’t tell yourself you will. But you most certainly can work out a few times a week this entire year, so why not goal yourself to that and see what you can do!
Here are ideas for 12 changes you can make this year to improve yourself in the new decade:
Happy belated new years! As cheesy as new year’s resolutions are, I like to embrace this time of new beginnings. It’s not just exercise your body into looking a certain way. It’s not just to do things because people expect it of you. How do you want to evolve this year? What dreams do you have that you’ve never gone after? what if you started making baby steps towards it this year? What’s in your way?
