How to Save Money on the Things You Love

As you may have gathered, I am a bit of a shopaholic, but I’m also a huge deal hunter. I believe in treating yourself to the things you love, but also being really responsible with finances. Finding great deals takes some extra leg work and sometimes a lot of patience. But if you’re willing to take a few extra steps, you can get all the excitement of a splurge, without the hefty cost!

Keep reading for some of my secrets to scoring deals on beauty, fashion, and home decor!

Beauty: I love to treat myself to fancy skincare and makeup at Sephora, but it can be costly. They actually have a really great rewards and free sample program that you can take advantage of! When you enroll, you earn points for each purchase that you can redeem on trial size items. You also get 2 free samples with every order, and there is always an array of promo codes for other free samples. Once you enroll in their reward program, you also get a free birthday gift!

The key to working the system is to purchase what you would normally buy when there are freebies that you actually want. For example, I buy a face cream about once a month from them, but when I start running low, I keep an eye out for what the reward items are. They frequently offer sample sizes of products I also frequently use, so I stock up! They add new items every week or so, so its worth checking in a couple of times when you are ready to purchase.

Fashion: I love my designer clothes, but I almost never pay anywhere near full price for them. I frequent sites like Poshmark, The Real Real, and the Rent the Runway sample sale, and keep an eye out for amazing pieces at equally amazing prices. If an item is still a splurge, you can keep watching it to see if the price dips lower. You have to be okay with the fact that you might miss out on something, but sometimes you can score an even better deal! I ended up buying a beautiful $1000 dress for my 30th birthday for over 90% off on the Rent the Runway sample sale!

I also almost exclusively shop the clearance sections of my favorite retailers, like Lululemon, Nike, and J Crew. I also keep an eye out for when there is an additional % off already reduced prices. This is where you can really score some great deals! Most of what I buy from Nike and J Crew is over 75% off the retail price.

Home Decor: Home decor doesn’t always have the fast clearance rate that clothing has, so its harder to come by deals. One of my tricks for getting deals on home pieces that I love is putting an item in my cart, and waiting to see if they email a discount code. You can also just keep an eye out for sales. Retailers like Pottery Barn and West Elm often rotate which items are on sale any given week. They sometimes also have extra discounts on clearance, but that can be a little more hit and miss!

You can also sign up for emails or rewards programs and often get an exclusive discount on your first purchase. If you are making a bigger purchase, it is worth taking a moment to do in order to get a greater discount.

The key to all of this is really to keep an eye out at your favorite places. It takes a little more work, and a little more patience, but you can end up saving a ton on something you really wanted. The other key is to make sure you actually really want what you are buying, and not that you are just buying it because it’s an amazing deal.
