I’ve written before about trying meal delivery services like Blue Apron and Hello Fresh. I really love the concept of these services because I don’t love cooking, and often find myself with a lot of waste when I buy ingredients to cook for one.
I am pretty budget conscious, so when I spend extra money on something like a meal service, I want it to be worth the money. I found that I wasn’t really happy with the variety of vegetarian options or the healthiness of the services that I had tried, and I ended up cancelling both of them.
After feeling like I was in a food rut and eating the same thing for dinner most nights, I started looking for something new. I had seen a few ads for a plant based meal delivery service called Splendid Spoon. I had looked at it a long time ago, but decided to check it out again. I love when companies have introductory offers that you can try without a long term commitment, so when I saw you could get your first shipment for a discount, I decided to give it a try.
The plan that I decided to do was 5 smoothies and 5 bowls, which is $95 a week. I loved that you could pick from a lot of options for both the smoothies and bowls/soups, and that you could double up if you wanted more than one of a certain kind. It was nice to be able to pick any option that I wanted since everything was plant based. Since I was ordering the meals as dinners, I tended to pick options that were more of a mixed bowl than soups, but the soups looked really great too!
The meals came in a 100% recyclable package, that was much easier to recycle than other services. I was really happy to see that. The meals can be refrigerated or frozen to last longer, which I also appreciated. The smoothies that I received had to be consumed within 2 weeks. The meals can be cooked on the stove top or in the microwave, which made them even more convenient, and there was 0 prep time.
One thing I didn’t realize was that one meal or smoothie is actually 2 portions. Since I’m not worried about calories, I didn’t mind eating or drinking the entire thing, but it did feel a little misleading if you were glancing at the nutrition facts of the item. For me personally, I would have to eat the entire bowl or eat half with a side!
The meals were delicious I am happy to be getting a greater variety of healthy foods in my diet. The smoothies all seem to have pea protein in them, which sometimes upsets my stomach, but they didn’t seem to bother me which was good. I didn’t end up eating everything the first week, so I cancelled the second week delivery. I think going forward I will only do the service every other week at most.
$95 breaks down to $9.50 for each bowl and smoothie, which does feel a little expensive to me. Like always, I will continue to evaluate if it still feels worth what I am spending! I do like that you have the flexibility to cancel any week’s delivery, so you’re not committed to buying it every week. I think it will be nice to have on the weeks that I just can’t get my life together to grocery shop and cook!
