About once a week I find myself saying “I have nothing to wear!” as I stare into my closet that is filled with clothes. Its not that I don’t have anything, but I am either tired of wearing the same 4 things each week, or I don’t feel like wearing a certain fashion piece that literally never gets worn. I thought I would share some advice on how to build a smart wardrobe and to make the most of what you already have in your closet.
Find what you love and stick to it. If you have a favorite pant cut or jean style, buy more! I have a jean style that I love, but for some reason I always try to buy jeans from different stores and end up never wearing them. If you know a pant is your favorite, stock up on extras.
Use Pinterest to style. Every time that I buy something, I look it up on Pinterest and save it to a “Closet” board. Often similar styles will pop up in the related pins with different ways the item was styled and I save those too. If I’m struggling with what to wear, I scroll through the board to look for different outfit ideas.
Simple style is the easiest. The more fashionable an item is, the harder it is to style and rewear in new ways. It is fun to wear a fashion dress or trendy top now and then, but also round out your closet with a good assortment of basic tops, pants, and skirts. It much easier to accessorize a fashion item like fun shoes or a scarf on a basic outfit. You can read more about building a basic wardrobe on my post here!
Don’t love it? Get rid of it. If you have items that you’re hanging on to “just in case” you might need them, its time to get rid of them. The clutter only takes up space. My advice is to go through your closet after each season to purge. In the spring, look at all your sweaters and decide which you actually wore all winter. One way to help get rid of clutter is to sell your gently used clothing on Poshmark to make some extra cash. I’ve found this to be a good way to get rid of the clothes that I don’t wear, while giving me extra cash to buy pieces that I will wear!
Style it like a pro. If you think your outfit still looks drab, try styling it in a different way. I love the J. Crew sleeve roll for a modern look on button down shirts. The same goes for pant hems– if your pants look odd with your shoes, try rolling the hem 1-2 times for a more cropped look!
You can also try tucking your shirt in different ways– fully tucked in your pants, the front only, one part of the front only– it can completely change how the outfit looks and really is the secret to looking intentionally styled. Just look at the difference below!
Now roll some sleeves and go forth and be stylish!
